Journey of Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari
Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari is the Academy Professor and Chief Mentor for Promotion of Data-driven Applied and Translational Research, Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, India and Chief Mentor, Open-Source Drug Discovery. He served as the Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (India), the largest chain of publicly funded industrial research and development institutions in the world, from 2007-13. During his tenure he envisioned and created the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research to generate human resource for transdisciplinary research, by leveraging the infrastructure and scientific strength of CSIR and pioneered several inclusive innovation models.
He is also the Founder Director of CSIR-Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology, Delhi (1997-2007) and championed genomics research in India. Prior to this, he was a Professor of Biophysics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His scientific research is focused towards the integration of Structural Biology with Genomics, Molecular Biology, and Information Science forging towards Integrative Biology.
He has over 185 publications in peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters, 14 International patents and 23 software copyrights. He has also commercialized the first Bioinformatics software in India and developed several diagnostics for genetic disorders. He served on the editorial board of Human Genetics, PLoS ONE, Journal of Translational Medicine, Executive Editor Progress in Preventive Medicine, and several others.
He conceptualized and implemented functional genomics in India and the Indian Genome Variation (IGV) project and made landmark contribution in developing the genetic landscape of India (J. Genetics 2008). He led the Indian team in the Pan-Asian SNP consortium, with participation of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand (Science, 2009). He pioneered the research on Ayurgenomics, a convergence of Ayurveda Science, a traditional personalized medicine and Genomics.
Drawing from his worldview about the global future of medicine and deep experience of working in a populous, developing country he conceptualized and established the Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) for tuberculosis, a collaborative translational research platform for affordable healthcare by mobilizing a community of 8700 college students and volunteer researchers from 130 countries, a model for Science 2.0. The Open Source model received global recognition during COVID-19 pandemic. Prof. Brahmachari is presently mentoring several startups in the area of healthcare, genomic medicine and big data analytics.
Internationally recognized for his role as a genomics pioneer in India, he has held the membership of the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) Council (2004-11) and Chairman, 13th International Human Genome Meeting (HUGO) 2008, India. Also served on the Advisory Board of the X Prize in Genomics Archon-X prize, USA (2006-14), member Expert Group on Human Rights and Biotechnology Commission of United Nations (2002) and the Scientific Advisory Board of US National Centre of Biomedical Ontology (NCBO), Stanford University (2012-14); Member planning Group of the Human Variome Project, Australia (2006); Council member Global Research Alliance (2007-13). He was a member of National Innovation Council, Government of India (2010-13); and served as advisory board member of the ‘Access and Delivery Partnership for Neglected Diseases’ project of UNDP (2013-18) and International Advisory Panel on Biotechnology Development (BIO-IAP), Malaysia (2009-11).
He served (2016-2023) as a member of International Scientific Advisory Board of Open Innovation Centre CRI, University of Paris V, France and International Advisory Board of India TB Research Consortium, India (2015-). He is an elected fellow of the World Academy of Sciences; the European Society of Preventive Medicine, as well as a member of all four National Academies of Science & Engineering in India. He has received honorary doctorates from five Indian Universities and several national and international awards and honors, including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1990), Joseph Austin McCartney & Ruth McCartney Hauck named Visiting Professorship, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. Prof. Brahmachari received the Distinguished Alumni Award of IISc. in 2008, the Centenary year of IISc.,
